Return to a time in America when millions of buffalo roamed the Great Plains, Native Americans lived free and trappers sought their fortunes by overcoming tremendous obstacles in their search of the beaver. Walt Thornley, a seventeen-year-old farm boy, and Silky Hanson, a thirty-seven-year-old farm hand, become convinced they can find riches in the western Indian Territories of 1840 by trapping beaver and taking buffalo hides. Leaving Independence, Missouri in early May they stop for one last beer in Westport Landing where they meet Jerome, an easygoing alcoholic drifter who convinces the two farmers to let him join their venture. The three would-be trapper-hunters enter the Great Plains with few supplies and less knowledge of how to survive. Misadventures begin occurring at an alarming rate. As their adventures unfold, Silky is unable to adjust to the stringent requirements of traveling on the open prairie his hostility toward Native Americans and his unwillingness to learn the necessary survival skills traps him into making costly mistakes. Walt, on the other hand, has the energy and youth to learn and adapt to the West; soon he is taking on an ever larger responsibility for leadership.

What a great adventure tale! The characters are well drawn and the action moves right along. I just wish it had been longer.
I hope there will be a sequel!
I think I read this book in 3 sittings. What it must have been like to live in those exciting, dangerous and perhaps a bit challenging of times. Sharing Silky's excitement as he leaves the comfort and protection of his brothers home to venture out into the wilderness with the likes of Walt was an adventure. I grew fond of all the characters and read with anticipation as the motley crew went from one scrap to another. Can not wait for Buffalo Man.
Clawson's love for the frontier comes through fully in Silky and Walt. His appealing characters drew me in, and his keen ear for dialog, vivid descriptions, and historical accuracy allowed me to enter comfortably into an enjoyable trance. I particularly appreciated his sympathetic treatment of the Dakota Sioux, where he developed those characters into full and complex people. A multi-talented author, Clawson even makes math books entertaining.
This is a continuously moving coming of age, right of passage story of 17 year old farm boy Walt, who is talked into leaving his brother's farm to venture out into the prairie to hunt beaver and buffalo along side a lying, bragging, negative and judgmental older man named Silky. The adventure begins immediately and continues through the book as they are both ill prepared, in every way, for what they set out to do, where they are, and who they may encounter.
Ultimately they are captured by the Pawnee Indians, rescued by a mountain man and befriended by the Lakota Souix and a drunk named Jerome. Silky and Walt is easy and fast to read, well written and reveals how challenging it was for young Walt to be partnered with Silky, who has no integrity and compromises Walt's life many times and yet Walt remains loyal to the end and learns hard lessons as he matures.
The end of the book seemed more like he beginning of the next phase for Walt, yet there is no indication there is another story to follow. I think a sequel would be in order.
